How we calculate

We start from how much hot water you really use, and compare it with how you heat it now.

Your hot water

Number of occupants times their use, in litres of hot water at 40 °C per day. From that follows the energy needed to heat tap water.

The tank

A heat pump water heater heats up more slowly. That is why the tank has to cover a full day, with some margin. We choose the smallest standard size that is enough.

The efficiency

How much heat the water heater draws from the air depends on where it stands. We calculate with a range, never with a single figure.

The comparison

We compare the power consumption with your current electric water heater, gas boiler or heating oil, using average energy prices you can adjust yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

What is a heat pump water heater?

A water heater with a small heat pump on top. It draws heat from the air and uses it to heat your water. So for the same amount of hot water you need a lot less power than with an ordinary electric water heater.

How big does the tank need to be?

That depends on the number of occupants and how much hot water you use. A heat pump water heater heats up more slowly than an ordinary water heater, so the tank has to cover your daily use. The calculator chooses the smallest standard size that is enough for that.

Where is the best place to put it?

In a room that is not heated and is large enough, such as a garage, cellar or storage room. Many units need at least twenty or so cubic metres, or air ducts to the outside. In a heated room, the water heater draws heat from your home.

Is it worth it if I currently heat my water with gas?

That depends on your gas and electricity prices. Compared with a gas combi boiler, the saving is often small. Compared with an electric water heater or heating oil, it is usually larger. The calculator works it out for your situation and tells you honestly if the saving is small.

Can it run on my solar panels?

Yes. With a timer or smart control, the water heater heats up during the day, when your panels are producing power. The calculator does not include that benefit, because it depends heavily on your panels and your habits.
